Tipp boys win Regional track championship
It was one of the most successful regional track meets in recent history for the Tippecanoe Red Devils. They scored 80 team points last week at Troy, easily winning the entire Division Three Regional meet. They outdistanced their closest competition by 17 points.
Several of Tipp’s athletes will compete at the state meet this weekend in Columbus, and some have a legitimate shot at winning a state championship.
There were a couple of finals run last Wednesday, and Tipp was involved in them.
Landon Kimmel had an intense battle in the 3200 meter run, as the Tipp senior ran 8:57.11 to win the regional championship. He survived runner-up Marcus Adelman of New Philadelphia, who finished .36 seconds behind Kimmel by running 8:57.47, setting up what will be quite a state championship race this weekend in Columbus.
Max Deckard and Will Strong again shined in the long jump. Deckard won the regional title with a leap of 22’ 9.25”, and Strong finished second overall with 22’ 6.5”. Both of them have advanced to the state finals this weekend.
In day two of the finals, Tipp went back to work again. In the 100 meter dash, Strong took home the regional championship with a time of 10.62 to send him to Columbus in another event.
Kimmel struck again on Friday, capturing the 1600 run, earning a championship with a 4:09.99 to win by just over one second against New Philadelphia runner Wyatt Lendon, who finished second with 4:11.21. Finishing 13th overall and missing out on qualifying for the state meet was Landon Muhlenkamp with a time of 4:28.06.
Capturing the 4x1 relay was the Tipp team of Wes Lowe, Grant Titley, Strong, and Deckard as they ran 42.05 to claim yet another regional title for the Red Devils.
Titley came back in the 400-meter dash and placed fifth overall, running 49.59, to also qualify for the state in that event.
Tipp’s Trey Sellers had a good day at the regionals in the high jump. The senior finished second overall with a leap of 6’ 7” which qualified him for the state meet this weekend.
Closing out the regionals for the boys, Strong outran the competition in the 200 meter dash, with a time of 21.53, a half second ahead of his closest competitor.
The state track meet is this weekend in Columbus. The Division Three boys run prelims and finals on Friday and Saturday.
