Civil War love letters to be read on May 13

Submitted by: Randolph Township Historical Society

On Wednesday, May 13, the Randolph Township Historical Society will host a program for the public of Civil War love letters. Local historian Rex Maggert and his daughter Shelley Schoen will read the letters that Jesse Burkett of West Milton and his sweetheart Sallie Weddle of Pigeye (south of West Milton) exchanged during Burkett’s Civil War service in the Union Army. Discovered when a house in Illinois was demolished, they are now the property of the West Milton Public Library, and Maggert, a local historian, and his daughter have supplemented them with their research.

The program will begin shortly after 7 p.m. on May 13 in the History Center at 114 Valleyview Dr., Englewood. The RTHS meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. The public is welcome at the programs, and there are also public hours from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. There is no admission charge.
