Vintage Tipp

The Tippecanoe Historical Society's picture this week is staying with the military theme to celebrate our country's 250th Anniversary.

Sometime around the turn of the century, Theodore and Anna Young moved to Tipp City from Cozaddale. They lived at 206 S. Second St. Leota Young was born in 1896 and later married "Mutt" Hoover. Her younger sister, Velma Young Barto, was born in 1908. Velma joined the WACs in December 1938.  She drove trucks all over Europe during the war. When the war ended, she was assigned to drive an officer to Buchenwald 30 days after the camp's liberation.  She wrote a letter home to her mother about the concentration camp.  After she returned stateside, she worked in recruiting in Alabama, and after her military service was over, she worked civilian jobs on an Air Force Base.

Velma also had a fun side, proven when she and a friend won the National Endurance Marathon Dance at Russel's Point in June of 1931.  Many of her items are available for reading at the Miami Valley Veterans Museum, 2245 S. Country Rd. 25A, Troy.  We have some of her things, as well as other family information, at our Historical Museum, which is open Saturdays 10-12.  For information, call 937-698-6798 or 734-845-6520.
