Bulldog winter sports updates

The wrestling team competed in the Eaton Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31, and finished 12th out of 28 teams. Eli Deter placed fourth, and Daulton Guthzeit, Chase Hamann, and Carter Hamann all placed fifth.

At the Coldwater Cavalier Invitational, Deeter (285 lbs.) placed second, and Carter Hamann (165 lbs.) placed fourth. The team overall placed 11th out of 30 teams. 

In girls wrestling, Amelia Moeller placed fifth at the Stebbins Tournament. 

The boys basketball team has been in the height of their season and competes multiple days a week. They lost to Mississinawa Valley on Monday, Feb.1, 52-30. They fell behind the entire game, and following this loss, their record stands at 5-11 overall. Levi Brumbaugh led the team with ten points, and Wesley Schommer and Carson Fulton each added seven points. 

The team found themselves in another unfortunate game situation when they fell to Arcanum on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 60-48. It was close following the first period, where the ‘dogs were only behind by three points, and by halftime, they were only down by seven.

However, the Trojans pushed by the Bulldogs in the third period, and they were unable to catch back up. Brumbaugh scored 15 points, had six assists, four rebounds, and six steals. Fulton contributed nine points, and Hunter Fraley added six points and eight rebounds. The team’s record stands at 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, the ‘dogs saw a turnaround on senior night. They were able to win over conference opponent Bethel, 63-41. Brumbaugh had an outstanding game, scoring 21 points, adding four rebounds, and recording three steals. He stayed aggressive and made it difficult for the Bees to come back. 

Lone senior Gauge McKee, who was honored that evening, added 13 points and four assists. Other key players include Fraley, who added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Zach Carpenter with six points and four rebounds. The record moves to 6-12 overall and 4-8 TRC.

They also honored the senior cheerleaders alongside McKee. This includes Makayla Carmack, Jessa Lightner, Sofie Elliott, and Rebecca Horn.

On the girls side of things, they have had a successful season thus far. They were able to beat conference opponent Northridge, 57-38, after an early game lead. Their record is now 15-6 overall and 10-3 in the TRC after this win. Addi Case led this big win by scoring 21 points. Michaela Firks added 18, and Kate Copp added seven. 

The girls also had a huge victory over Riverside, 76-25. The team led by more than 20 points at halftime, and all nine players scored. 

Freshman Layla Fulton had an impressive stat layout. She scored 13 points and added eight rebounds, nine assists, six steals, and two blocks. Firks had a double-double as she scored 14 points and secured 13 rebounds. Copp scored 15 points, which was the most of the night. Stella Blackburn added 12 points, and Case had nine points and four rebounds. Additional scoring comes from Sophie Layman with four, Campbell Berner with two, Katie Muncy with three, and Aubree Bates with two. Their record is now 16-6 (11-3 TRC).
