Tipp defeats Milton on Senior Night

It was a good day on the mat for the Tippecanoe wrestling squad, as they hosted Milton Union on Senior Night last week. After falling behind 9-6 early, the Red Devils reeled off three wins in a row, then capped the day with three straight pins to seal the win over the Bulldogs 48-21.

“It was a good night, going into it, I thought we matched up really well,” Tipp coach Nick Petro said. “If our technique was right, we were going to come out on top. The guys have really demonstrated all the hard work they have put forth this year.”

Starting out the day was 132 pounder Kaiden Holtzapple for Tipp. He was pinned in 3:40 by Seth Lowry to put Tipp down early in the match.

Eli Stacy came back at 139 and had a big 7-3 victory against Dylan McGuffey to earn Tipp three big points in the match.

“Eli came out and wrestled as poised and confident and calm as we would ever want to see. He did really well,” Petro said. “He was in control of the match and showed why he is a junior on the team and got his victory.”

Chase McCormick picked up the win for Tipp at 144 against Daulton Guthzeit 14-12. Colton Adams lost at 150 for the Red Devils 13-8 to give Milton the 9-6 lead. It would be their last lead of the match.

Tipp then reeled off three straight wins as Wyatt Robbins at 152 pinned Isaac Sowers in 3:05.  Raiden Nicholls also got the win at 165 for Tipp in 1:42, and Jared Maxfield brought home the win at 175 for Tipp via forfeit over Milton. With those three wins, Tipp took a 24-9 lead.

“Raiden has been in and out of the lineup working through some injuries and this was his first match back,” Petro said. “We knew we needed a pin to turn the tide and put the stamp on how the rest of the night was going to go.”
“He knew the job he needed to do, and went out and got it done. He was calm and explosive like a leader needs to do.”

“Wyatt is a freshman who went out and wrestled hard,” he added. “He was down going into the period where he got into position to get the pin.”

Tipp forfeited 190 and both teams passed on 215. Tipp’s Brian Lomell fell to Eli Deeter at 285 in a 1:28 pin to see the Tipp lead drop to 24-21. From there, it was all Tipp.

A forfeit at 106 gave Tipp’s Declan Couch the win, then three straight pins to close out the scoring portion of the day.

Trace Frazier won at 113 with a pin in 41 seconds, Carter Dennison at 120 earned a pin for Tipp in 49 seconds, and Eliot Thomas pinned Zaden Farmer at 126 for Tipp, ending the scoring at 46-21.
