Tipp earns girls soccer title after crazy series of events
It was one of the wildest and craziest girls soccer games in recent memory at Tippecanoe. After losing a three goal lead, Tipp scored to take a lead midway through the second half only to see Butler tie the game at 4-4 which is how it ended in regulation, and at the time, giving Tipp a share of the league championship.
During the game, Butler was penalized for playing their goalie in four halves in the same day (JV and varsity, with the rule stating a player can only play three in the same day) which forced them to play a girl short for the rest of the game.
Following the game, it was reported that Butler had to forfeit the game due to using the ineligible player, and Tipp was rewarded with the victory and the outright MVL championship.
“We definitely made it difficult for ourselves at times. But when you win a league championship, it is a large time period of coming together. We can hold our heads high knowing we got a share and didn’t lose a league game,” said Tipp coach Brett Palmer before realizing the forfeit was going to happen.
Tipp scored early in the game, 19 seconds in to be exact when Maryn Perrault took a pass on the left side and ripped a shot from 20 yards out right past the Butler keeper to give the Red Devils a very quick 1-0 lead.
At 18:50, Mady Turner scored to make it 2-0, then Marin Dakin found the net on a corner kick at the 15 minute mark, and Tipp was in total control of the game at 3-0.
“The girls came ready to play, scoring three quick goals and had other opportunities,” Palmer said.
Then just as quick, Tipp lost the lead heading into halftime. Butler scored three goals in a span of ten minutes, and with 5:10 left in the half, the game was tied at 3-3.
“We were the author of our own problems there,” Palmer said. “We gave the ball away too much and were a little frantic.”
Tipp responded with 18 minutes left in the game when Turner scored her second of the night. But Butler would not go away, scoring the tying goal again with 4:51 left in the game, making it 4-4. At that point, Tipp just didn’t want to give Butler the go ahead goal and at worst, get out with a tie and a league title.
Tipp now opens the postseason tomorrow night hosting Belmont at 7 pm and the winner comes back on Monday against West Carrollton.
