Four reach doubles as Tipp blast Piqua

Four of the five Tippecanoe starters reached double figures, helping to lead the Red Devils to a 69-38 victory over Piqua in a Miami Valley League boys basketball game over the holidays.

CJ Bailey continues his hot start to the season with a game high 26 points, while Colin Turner added 18, Hudson Ganger scored 11, and Bryton Otto finished with 10.

“Day to day, we are getting better,” Tipp coach Brock Moon said. “There are a lot of things we need to clean up, and I thought we competed really well today. We just have to keep getting better.”

“Hudson came out and hit a couple of threes in the first quarter that really helped us, and he can really shoot the ball. His best basketball is in front of him. David Alvarez is also coming off of being sick. Having those two guys with their ability to shoot the ball really helps us, in addition to CJ and Colin.”

Tipp exploded out to a quick lead as Ganger knocked down those mentioned threes and Turner added a score at the rim, giving Tipp a 10-2 lead midway through the opening period. The Indians cut their deficit to 12-6. The Red Devils used a 10-0 run behind four different starters scoring during that run to push their lead to 22-6 as Piqua ended the quarter with a pair of buckets.

Bailey had a huge second period, scoring 11 points, leading Tipp to extend their lead to 44-19 at the break. Turner added seven in the period as the Red Devils were on cruise control heading into the second half.

While unable to push the lead enough to get a running clock, Tipp was close, getting the lead to 34 and 33 a few times. Bailey duplicated his second period with another 11 points for Tipp as they cushioned their advantage and remained unbeaten on the season.

With his solid performance, Bailey continues to lead the MVL in scoring at 21.3 per game and leads in steals with 4.3. He is also third in assists, trailing the league leader and teammate Turner.

“We wanted to push the pace, and there are things we need to clean up tonight, which we will see when we watch film,” Moon said. “But I thought we did a good job pressuring the ball and increasing tempo.”

*Also last week, the Red Devils earned another pair of wins. On Friday night, Tipp defeated Sidney 74-56, with four players scoring in double figures. Otto led the Red Devils with 22 points while Bailey added 17, Turner scored 12, and Ganger scored ten. Tipp led 39-32 at the half and pulled away in the second half.

Tipp also defeated Stebbins 71-48 as Bailey led Tipp with 22 points and Otto scored 16.

Also for Tipp, 13 points each for Alverez and Ganger.

The Red Devils traveled to Butler last night and head to Greenville on Friday night.
