Tipp reaches 100 consecutive MVL games without a loss
It was a huge milestone night for the Tippecanoe boys soccer team last Thursday, as they defeated West Carrollton 9-0. This extends their conference streak to 100 consecutive games without a loss, dating back to their time in the Central Buckeye Conference (CBC). Tipp’s last league loss was at home against Tecumseh in 2014 in the CBC.
“I could not do any of this (100 game streak) without (former coaches) Scott (Downing), Bob Servis, and Ian (Porto),” Tipp coach Joel Slyman said. “I am just glad to be a part of it. We just have a special program, and it started with those guys, and we kind of just keep it going.”
“That was the best conference game I ever saw, the loss to Tecumseh,” Porto jumped in. Tipp has not lost a league game in 11 years and has never lost one in the MVL. “We have just a tight knit community and coaching staff. We have guys who used to play who have come back to coach, they know what the program is,” Slyman said. “They know we have a culture here and are so proud of it.” Tipp started their scoring early when Mason Lopez put the Red Devils on the board first off a pass from Brayden Kocher, then Colin Turner added to the lead when he scored with the assist going to Mason Mader.
Cameron Smith scored on consecutive goals, with the first shot assisted from Kaleb Logan. With a 4-0 lead, the Red Devils closed out the half with goals from Maddox Robinson and Mader, giving the host Red Devils a six goal lead at the break. The Red Devils added to their lead in the second half as Wes Tipton took a pass and scored around the box at 28:21 left in the game to increase the Tipp lead to 7-0. Fifteen minutes later, West Carrollton scored an own goal to give Tipp their eighth goal of the game, and with 8:30 left, Tipp struck again as Eli Kettel found the back of the net to push the Red Devils lead out to 9-0.
“Credit to West Carrollton for really playing hard,” Slyman said. “They play an offside trap which is different for us to play against, and we had to do things a little differently tonight. We wanted to get guys involved and mixed guys into different positions.” “I relate it to basketball, you see the ball going through the net and it gives you confidence and momentum going forward and that is what games like this are.”
Tipp is now 96-0-4 in their last 100 league games, a string that has their overall record 177-21-12 and two state titles.
