Sports Notes: Golf squads both win MVL title

It was a very successful day at Windy Knoll Golf Course in Springfield, as the Tippecanoe boys and girls golf squads competed for the MVL season title. Both teams finished at the top of the conference in the regular season. Capping off the overall title would mean they need to finish at the top at the league tournament.

The Tipp boys opened the day in the morning with a battle to the end with the Troy Trojans. Both finished the day with a 307 to share the tournament championship. But due to the regular season standings, the Red Devils were crowned the outright MVL champions on the season.

Butler was fourth overall with a 315 as the top four teams were within eight strokes of each other.

Max Gustavson led the way for the Red Devils with a 74, one of four players to shoot sub-80 on the day. Carson Jackson and Grant Paulett each finished the day with 77, with Thomas Miller carding a 79 on the day. Andrew Gagnon finished his day with an 80, and Trey Bottles shot an 84 as all six Tipp golfers finished with a solid day.

The overall medalist was Troy’s Mitchell Sargent as he fired a two-under par 70.

Also locally, Butler was fourth with a 315, led by Timothy Jacobs, who shot 75 on the day. Both Bennett Bardonaro and Zane Eyler had a 79, while Alex Hale shot 82, Luke Holop 84, and Isaac Dadey finished with an 86.

Over in the girls tournament, Tippecanoe finished the day with a 355. A comfortable 10-shots ahead of second place Greenville, who finished with 365. Butler was fifth with 426.

Finishing as co-medalist on the day was Tipp’s Ella Berning and Greenville’s Vera Cox, as each senior shot 81 on the day. Behind Berning for Tipp was Kylie Schreiner, who had 83. Ava Hanrahan had a 95, Bristol Kovaleski had a 96 on the day, and Mya Schreiner finished her day with 105.

Leading the scoring for Butler was Haylie Schultz, who finished with 93. Kaylie Hittle had 100, Emery Kuhlman finished with a 101, Izzy Thoma carded a 103, Kamri Mendenhall had 104, and Izzy French had 107.

Cross Country- The Tipp cross country team was off last week. They will be competing in the Miami County Meet this weekend, along with the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville. Then, it’s off to Northmont next weekend for their Invitational before returning home on October 1 for the Dave Lightle Invitational at Kyla Park. You can read about these races in upcoming editions of the Gazette.

Thursday Night Football- Just a reminder, due to the Mum Festival this weekend, the Tippecanoe football game this week will be held on Thursday night at the Stadium against Sidney, 7 p.m.

Girls Soccer- Julia Burgbacher and Maryn Perrault both scored a goal, but the Red Devils lost to Indian Hill at the Stadium, 2-1, in a non-conference game.

Also last week, the Red Devils got back on the winning track with a 3-0 victory at Fairborn to remain second overall in the Miami Division of the MVL.

Burgbacher and Mady Turner both scored in the first half for Tipp to give them a 2-0 lead at the break, before Kendall Davis capped the scoring in the second half.

Tipp also handed Oakwood their first loss of the season, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Kenzie Curry scored the game winning lone goal of the game.
