Local Author to Release New Book
Aimee Noel, a Tippecanoe English teacher and Dayton resident, is set to release her book Slag, which is available for pre-order at h ttps://sheilanagigblog.com/. And she couldn’t be more excited.
Aimee holds poetry and its impact on any given reader close to her heart. When asked about the process of writing Slag, she shared an anecdote on how ideas for her poetry form. She says, “One evening, staring at my great grandma’s cookie jar, I was musing that, when I was a kid, all the cookies in that jar were store-bought. Grandma-ma never baked cookies. She was too busy working, of course, to make homemade treats, but that hadn’t registered with me until that very moment. One of the jobs she had as a young woman was in the steel mill. And suddenly I had to know everything about it. That research brought the poems in the first two sections to the surface.”
For Noel, poetry is more than a collection of words. It’s an expression of one’s feelings and life experience. This is what makes Slag such an anticipated read. Instead of looking to convey a message or story through her writing, Aimee feels as though it’s up to the reader. The words and phrases she writes are for each reader to commune with as they wish. Aimee wants readers to ask themselves how her writing makes them feel, rather than search for meaning between the lines.
Slag is more than a collection of words and stanzas on pages, but an experience for whoever is ingesting them. Noel says, “We are all walking archives. What we hold in ourselves of our families, settings, and communities shapes how we move through the world. Though poetry is fiction, it is that internal archive that informs my perspective for this collection.” In reading the Dayton author’s book, one can hope to enjoy the intelligent compositions of Aimee Noel while reflecting on one's own livelihood.
Aimee’s growth and transition through life can be witnessed and connected with throughout her poetry. The published author feels as though the woman who began writing Slag was incredibly self-conscious about the pursuit of art. Now, through accepting and acknowledging the importance of art and her talents, Aimee can optimistically and confidently share her writing with an audience that can embrace and enjoy it.
Aimee Noel is publishing Slag, a compilation of poetry, from publisher Sheila-Na-Gig Press. After its release, Slag will also be available in local bookstores, as well as on Amazon. Readers can not only appreciate and enjoy the material but relate Slagto their own lives, just as Aimee has intended.
