Vintage Tipp

The Tippecanoe Historical Society mystery pictures last week were of camping groups that evidently camped along the river north and south of Park Avenue. This picture is dated 1894 and we are most certain that the campsite is where the Aquatic Center parking area is now.

It is beyond me why, in the heat of the summer, all these people set up these huge tents, carted all the furniture to the site, cooked their meals, and did without restroom facilities all while wearing long dresses and skirts and long sleeves. And all to set up just blocks from town! Several well-known families had cabins right along the river in this same area.

Stop by the museum on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to browse through the large file of camping pictures we have. Call 937-6798 or 734-845-6520 to make an appointment for another time, or to ask questions.
