Tippecanoe Marching Band Promises Frightfully Good Time this Fall

As children, we’ve all grappled with the fears of a monster being under our bed. This year, the Tippecanoe Marching Band will center its show theme on that very fear.

Not to worry, however. The theme, “There’s a Monster Under My Bed”, promises to take on a lighter spin. The audience will find itself humming along with familiar tunes like Brahms’ Lullabye and Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King. Four movements will make up the entirety of the performance.

Approximately 70 students make up the marching band this year, an increase over last year. This includes members of the color guard, who will be tasked with visually telling the story of a frightened child. Initially, one soloist will represent the child who is afraid of the monsters in her bedroom. The monsters will be represented by the remaining members of the color guard. Props for the show include five large window frames, a large area rug and a very large bed. This bed is actually designed to conceal members of the color guard during different points in the performance.  Director Jonathan Gaul shares that a surprise twist is in store for all who watch the show. “There is a surprise ending. At the end of the show, our ‘child’ actually becomes one of the monsters.”

“There’s a Monster Under My Bed”, like last year’s show, is a prepackaged show purchased for the Tippecanoe High School Band to use and adapt for the 2025 season. Creating shows is a year-round process, and having the show ready to plug and play makes Gaul’s inaugural season just a little bit more manageable. Eventually, however, custom shows may return to Tipp City Schools. The sky is the limit, as far as Gaul is concerned.

The Tippecanoe Marching Band debuted its new theme in a halftime performance during the varsity football game on August 22. Watch along through all varsity football games and band contests to see the show in its entirety by the end of the season. And mark your calendars now for the Tipp City OMEA Band Invitational on Saturday, September 20.
