Tipp girls open with rainy 6-0 win over Greenville

Just five minutes into the season opener last week, the heavens opened up and both Tippecanoe and Greenville wondered if their game would even continue.

An hour later, the game continued, and Tipp took care of business to defeat the Green Wave 6-0. The Red Devils enjoyed a solid second half en route to the victory.

“It is always nice to get a shutout win at home, and our priority every year is to win the league. You can’t do that until you win the first one,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “You still have to respond and still have to play (with the weather). The girls had a bit of a shaky first half, but they came out and played hard in the second.”

Before the lightning delay, Tipp found the back of the net in the opening three minutes when Kenzie Curry scored from 10-feet out to give the Red Devils a quick 1-0 lead. The game resumed after nearly an hour delay, and the Red Devils continued to keep the ball in their scoring end but could not finish despite plenty of chances. Addi Kleather and Kendall Davis both had shots shortly after play resumed, then Addison Simons had a great attempt at the net only to see Rachel Ray record a huge save for Greenville.

Davis and Reagan Kettel both pressured the keeper with shots for Tipp only to be turned away. Finally, at 17:21, the Red Devils struck again. Maryn Perraut took the ball in from 40 yards out and fired one past the keeper, giving Tipp a 2-0 lead at the half. “Our girls were not expecting them to sit as deep when you have all 11 players within 35 yards of the goal, it will be hard to create chances,” Palmer said. “It took us a minute to break that down, but in the second half, we took better strides.”The second half saw the Red Devils take over the game. Maddie Hook scored at 37:36 for the third Tipp goal, while Mady Turner scored the next two goals for Tipp, making it 5-0 with 26:05 left in the game.

The final score for the Red Devils came at 5:05 when Julia Burgbacher ripped one into the corner, giving Tipp their six goal margin of victory. “We had 22 girls hit the field tonight, and it is certainly an encouragement when there is not a drop off between the starters and the players coming off the bench.”

The Tipp girls soccer team came back on Saturday and traveled down to Cincinnati. They battled the two-time defending state champions from Summit Country Day, who returns a lot of firepower from their championship seasons. The Red Devils fell 8-2 in the non-conference game, in a game they only trailed 3-1 with 18 minutes left in the game. From there, SCD turned it up and went on to the easy win.

Maryn Perrault continued her hot start to the season with another goal, and Marin Dakin added to the attack with a goal for Tipp.

The Red Devils travel to Troy tonight, then host Carroll on Saturday morning.
