School Record Broken at State Track Championships

Milton-Union athletes Payton Mayfield and Jenna Brumbaugh competed in the Division II State Track and Field Championships on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7. Mayfield competed in long jump, the 100-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash. Brumbaugh competed in the 800-meter dash.  Both athletes completed the day with podium placements and even a broken school record. On Thursday, June 5, a clap-out was held at Milton-Union’s athletic entrance to send both athletes and head coach Mike Meredith off to Columbus. They arrived at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium later that evening and toured the facility before competition.

On Friday, the first day of competition, Mayfield competed in the 100-meter dash prelims where he placed ninth in a time of 10.86 seconds. This qualified him for the finals, which took place on Saturday. Unfortunately, Mayfield did not place high enough to secure a place on the podium. However, making it to the finals in any event is a huge accomplishment. He also competed in the 200-meter dash prelims on Friday. He placed fifth overall in a time of 21.82 seconds which qualified him for the finals, which took place on Saturday afternoon.

In the finals, he placed eighth overall with a time of 10.99 seconds. This placement secured him a spot on the podium and an OHSAA medal. Brumbaugh raced the 800-meter dash on Saturday afternoon and had her best race of the season. She placed eighth overall and ran a time of 2:14.38. This time broke Milton-Union’s school record by 2 seconds. She also secured a spot on the podium and received an OHSAA medal.

Both of these athletes have had an impressive four years on the track and field team and wrapped up their careers nicely and at the top of the state in their respective events. Congratulations to both Mayfield and Brumbaugh!
