Tipp with dominant opening round baseball victory
The opening inning of the sectional baseball tournament was one that Tipp fans won’t soon forget.
After a 30 minute delay due to the late arrival of Ponitz, the Red Devils made very quick work of the Dayton City League opponent. The Red Devils scored 27 runs in the opening frame and cruised to a 28-0 victory in the opening round of the OHSAA Division Three Sectional baseball tournament at Clawson Field.
With the win, Tipp advances to the second round tonight, back at home against Piqua starting at 5 p.m.
“Anytime you can get a tournament win, it’s a boost to your team,” Tipp coach Cameron Dickens said. “Just being able to stay together as a group for a little while longer is a big deal for us. This group has been so enjoyable and so much fun to coach every day.”
“We have talked a lot about taking advantage of every opportunity we get. These next few days are a great opportunity for us to get prepared and be at our best for Piqua (tonight).”
The Red Devils pounded out 24 hits in the victory, including nine players with two hits for Tipp. They also spread the pitching around with four pitchers giving up only two hits. The crazy stat is that all 15 of the Pointz outs came via the strikeout.
Thirty-three batters came to the plate for the Red Devils in the opening inning when they scored nearly all of their runs. Preston Zumwalt opened the game with a double and two batters later, Carson Jackson singled in the first two runs of the game for Tipp. Bryce Eckert later singled in two more runs to push their lead to 6-0, then Zumwalt struck again with a single to bring home Harney and Tipp was off and running at 7-0 with only one out.
They were far from done. Walks and errors kept the inning alive then Landon Muhlenkamp singled two more runs and Brady Liskey doubled to make it 12-0. Eckert came back with another hit plating two more runs and it became 15-0 before a sacrifice fly in Zumwalt’s third at bat of the inning gave Tipp their 16th run of the inning.
Other big hits in the inning from McKinney, Dehus, Griffith and Browarsky added to their lead and the game was in hand.
