Lunch Break: Back To The Basics

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

When dealing with the forever-changing Ohio climate, there’s one food that tastes good no matter if it’s warm or cold, and I’m not just talking about the weather.

Pizza is a food loved by just about everyone. It’s the one thing a group can agree on when everyone’s hungry, but nobody knows what for. That’s why I decided to take a trip to Matty Q’s for an early midweek lunch.

Although I was craving a pie, I wasn’t necessarily craving pepperoni. I was excited when I saw the many possibilities outside of plain old meat and cheese. After some internal back and forth, I landed on trying the BLT pizza on thin crust. I also ordered some pizza bombs for a touch of a classic, and an exciting Red Bull from the Matty Q’s soda shop menu.

The pizza came out shortly after my “Peachy Clean Energy Drink,” which put a tasty pep in my step. The pizza tasted like a fun mix between a summer staple and an Italian classic. I loved how the cheesy bacon bites contrasted with the fresh, crunchy lettuce and tomatoes. I followed up a few bites of my pizza with a Pizza Bomb. The sweet pastry and savory filling were absolutely delicious when dipped in the buttery garlic sauce, and I would return just for another basket of the bombs alone. My friend’s Texas That sandwich also looked pretty tasty from across the table, and I regret not asking to steal a bite.

The meal itself was great, but what made my trip to Matty Q’s special was the atmosphere. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere with people as kind and attentive since my trip to the Bulldog Diner. The staff at Matty Q’s proved why nothing beats a small-town pizza parlor. Everyone came around multiple times to make sure my meal was enjoyable and that I had everything that I needed. Each staff member was really genuine, and I left feeling full of pizza and good vibes.

Even if you aren’t craving pizza, and you happen to stumble upon Matty Q’s nonetheless, you can expect to leave in a better mood than when you got there. I’ll be returning at least until I try every fun soda on the menu and then some!

Matty Q’s, 1469 South Market Street, Troy.
