Girls Track Wins Three Rivers Conference Championships
The Milton-Union track and field day had plenty of success at the Three Rivers Conference (TRC) Championships which took place on May 15 and 17. Walking away with the girls team placing first, the boys team placing second, two athletes being named “Athlete of the Year” and one coach being named “Coach of the Year.”
Starting the meet out strong on Thursday night, the girls 4x800 meter relay team placed first. The team consisted of Jenna Brumbaugh, Aubree Bates, Madalyn Korte, and Sydnie Bartlett. They finished in a time of 10:07.79, which was 34 seconds faster than the second place team.
Also on Thursday night, Colin Hinkelman placed first in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:18.14.
Most events took place on Saturday, where many athletes had their best performances of the season.
Kate Copp placed first in the 100-meter hurdles. She ran the race in a time of 17.25 seconds.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Sophie Layman took first place, running the race in a time of 50.34 seconds, which was a personal best for her. Copp came in second, running it in 50.52 seconds, also a personal best. This 1-2 finish was essential and helped the girls team score more points.
Brumbaugh had three outstanding performances on Saturday to accompany her relay team win from Thursday. She placed first in long jump, where she jumped a distance of 17’ 3 ¾”. This was a personal best for her and also a meet record.
She also placed first in the 400-meter dash, running a time of 59.67 seconds. And finally, she won the 800-meter dash in a time of 2:22.64.
Payton Mayfield also had an impressive day on Saturday. Falling short of first place in long jump in Thursday’s competition by just one spot, he was determined to win all his other events and defend his titles.
Mayfield placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.24 seconds. He also placed first in the 400-meter dash, running it in a time of 49.80. Finally, he placed first in the 200-meter dash, running it in a time of 22.57 seconds.
With both Brumbaugh and Mayfield having multiple wins, they scored the most points out of any other competing athletes. Their hard work and success earned them both the title of “Athlete of the Year” on the girls and boys side. It is a great accomplishment for Milton-Union to have two of their own earn both of these titles.
But the success continued. The girls team won the TRC title. With this win, head coach Mike Meredith was named “TRC Girls Track Coach of the Year.”
This meet was a huge success on both sides. Even if athletes did not place first in their event, many of them had personal best times during these races and many placed in the top five. This is a perfect setup as the team heads into the District Championships which began on May 22.
