Girls Basketball Begins Season Undefeated
The Lady Bulldog basketball team has started their season on the strongest note possible - undefeated.
With nine players total, meaning only enough for a varsity team, they have been working to create a cohesive and trustworthy team that can carry them to success.
Junior Addi Case has already played a big part in carrying this team to victory, stepping into the upperclassmen role.
“I think we bond together and click as a team more than I’ve experienced with the program the past three years,” she shared. “We keep each other motivated… which impacts how we play.”
The team opened their season against the Newton Indians on Nov. 22 and took a win by over 20 points. The final score was 63-41.
They then traveled to Lehman Catholic on Nov. 24 to play in a conference matchup. They won this game, meaning they started at 1-0 in the Three Rivers Conference.
In a 61-34 victory, Michaela Firks led the ‘dogs with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Case also added 16 points and Kate Copp with 12.
Freshman Layla Fulton scored an additional nine points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Junior Sophie Layman was also able to add 10 rebounds.
To start December out strong, the girls found themselves on the road again. They took a 62-29 win over the Dixie Greyhounds, which moved their overall record to 3-0.
The season is just starting, though. The shortage of numbers compared to what the program is used to seeing isn’t stopping this group from working toward their goals.
“Even though we have short numbers, we are a very dedicated team,” Case said.
The team was matched up against Troy Christian on Dec. 6 on the road again. They will then return to the home court to play against Miami East. Both of these inner-conference games will be crucial to the team's success moving forward.
