Butler Township votes no on Dog Leg development

BUTLER TOWNSHIP — In a unanimous vote, the Butler Board of Trustees denied development on Dog Leg Rd., restoring some residents’ trust at the Dec. 8 trustees’ meeting.

The Dog Leg Rd. proposal would have produced nearly 250 residential lots, but faced backlash from numerous community members whose support has echoed through months of recent trustees' sessions.

On the night of the public hearing, five residents reiterated their disapproval of the development, appealing to the board to remember Butler Township’s rural identity. Residents also reminded leadership of their desire for trust and good faith following recent reelections and recalled the Zoning Commission’s consistent denial of the developer’s proposals.

“When we think about homes that come into the township, I think it is important to know that Butler Township is known by all of us as what I like to call a ‘level up community,’” Trustee Jackson said. “I do think that we have to vigilantly keep and continue to maintain the types of developments and housings and things that we allow into the township.”

The Butler Board of Trustees also voted 3–0 to approve regulations for cannabis use within the township, officially prohibiting it within township zones. This approval also comes after months of trustee deliberation and the approval of both staff and the township’s Zoning Commission.

The Butler Board of Trustees will next meet on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m. for a public session.  Interested residents are encouraged to attend this meeting and may either join in-person at the Butler Township Meeting Hall, located on 3780 Little York Rd. in Dayton, or online through the Butler Township YouTube channel.
