Sports Notes: Berning qualifies for state golf
Tippecanoe senior Ella Berning survived a very tough Division One girls district tournament last week. She grabbed the final individual spot for the State Championships held earlier this week in Akron.
Berning shot a 77 at Pipestone to finish in a three-way tie before heading into a playoff. On that hole, Berning shot a birdie on the par-four tenth hole to earn a trip to the state meet.
Berning started strong in the district and was one under heading into her ninth hole. Starting on #10, she reached 18 before making the turn and had four straight bogeys to drop to +3 and finished her round at +5 to head into the playoff.
Berning competed at state on Sunday and Monday, and her results will be posted in next week's Gazette.
*Gustavson falls in districts- Tipp golfer Max Gustavson shot a 79 in the district meet also at Pipestone Golf Course to finish his season short of a trip to the Division One boys state meet. Like the girls, the top three teams and individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the state meet. It took a -4 68 to qualify for state.
*Tournament Draw info- The Tipp soccer teams, along with the unbeaten volleyball team, all had their tournament draw recently, with the sectional tournament games beginning this week around Ohio.
Starting with volleyball, the #1 seed Red Devils played their first round game last night at Fairborn against Dayton Belmont out of the City League. Assuming they got the victory, the Red Devils would return to Fairborn next Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. against either #11 Stivers or #12 Trotwood Madison. A Red Devil victory would send them into the District Finals on Saturday, October 25 at Fairfield High School, with game time and details yet to be determined.
Boys Soccer earned the #2 seed and also played last night against #14 Bellefontaine, who has won four games this season. Five of their losses were two goals or less.
A Tipp win sends them into the second round against a winless Greenville team at 2 p.m. on this Saturday at the City Park Stadium.
If Tipp gets the win, they return to the field next Tuesday, October 22, against either #9 Piqua or #10 Belmont. That winner advances to the district finals on October 25.
As for the girls soccer team, they open their tournament tomorrow night hosting #17 Ponitz at 7 p.m. at the City Park, then a good second round battle would likely be at Chaminade Julienne on Monday at 7 p.m.
