Lunch Break

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

From Two Js to One

Last week, I was sitting outside the local deli and carry-out, JJ’s, enjoying the autumn vibes with a buffalo chicken wrap and a calm fall breeze. Then, in true Ohio fashion, the weather took a turn from autumnal to wintery in just a few days. In my opinion, cold temperatures call for one cure, Chinese food.

This week, I decided to stick around in Troy and stick to the 10th letter of the alphabet. I had a cozy and delicious mid-week dinner with friends at the nearby tucked-away gem, J’s Cuisine.

J’s is only open until 8:30 p.m., and they don't serve alcohol. However, the adorable Chinese restaurant is hidden behind Steak and Shake and Applebee's and is definitely worth a visit.

Although it looks tiny from the outside, J’s has a classical and calm cultural sit-down vibe, as well as a menu full of comforting dishes for a chilly evening. I regret not ordering the hot Jasmine tea to really absorb the atmosphere to the fullest.

When it was time to order, I was torn between the soups, ramen, and specials. I decided upon the dumplings, and crab Rangoon to share, and the Sesame Chicken meal with steamed rice for myself.

The Rangoon and dumplings arrived first. The Crab Rangoon was both crunchy and creamy, and irresistible when dipped into a gooey sweet sauce. The dumplings were deliciously crispy on the outside, and bursting with flavor within.

The bite-sized appetizers were the perfect predecessor to an amazing meal. The sesame chicken melted in my mouth with each tangy bite, and the warm steamed rice was good for my stomach and my soul.

After a cozy dinner at J’s Cuisine, I felt brave enough to make my way through the wintry wind to my car, and straight to Cold Stone for some ice cream. Life is all about balance, after all.
