Tipp continues MVL success with win over Butler

The bats were out for both sides last week when Butler came to town to battle Tippecanoe in a MVL softball matchup with both teams trying to stay in contention for the league title. The Red Devils jumped out to a good lead through five innings, then held on as Butler’s comeback fell short, with Tipp earning an 11-6 victory over the Aviators.

“We were selective but aggressive tonight, and we need to make sure we get good hitters counts,” Tipp coach Charles Tackett said. “The girls did that and we are doing things right. We are just trying to tell them what to do to be successful.”

Butler actually scored first in this game with a run in the second inning when Irvin grounded out to bring home Whitman who had doubled earlier in the inning. Just that quickly, Tipp tied the game in their half of the second inning when Jocelyn Shelton tripled to right and scored on the throw home to quickly tie the game at 1-1.

One batter later, Tipp struck again.

Roo Snell, the leading hitter in the MVL, blasted a home run to left to give the Red Devils a 2-1 advantage.

Two innings later, the power returned for the Red Devils. Abby Chaney singled with one out in the third and Emily Aselage belted a two-run home run to left, pushing the Tipp lead to 4-1.

Tipp left two runners on in the fourth before striking again in the fifth.

Aselage reached on an error and scored when Kyla Fry doubled to left. Shelton singled to score courtesy runner Charlize McCormick for the sixth run of the game for Tipp.

Jaina Drum, who started on the mound for Tipp, then doubled in two runs to push the Tipp lead to 8-1.

Whitman blasted a two run home run to center in the sixth to bring Butler back to within four at 8-4, but Tipp answered in the sixth.

Gracie Raiff walked to lead off the inning and scored later on a wild pitch. Shelton delivered with a run-scoring single to make it 10-4. Tipp’s final run came in when Shelton scored on a wild pitch.

Jamie Brockert blasted a two-run home run in the seventh to close out the scoring for Butler.

“Jaina has pitched a couple of other big games for this this year, so we knew Jaina could get it done against these bigger schools,” Tackerr said. “She did her job. She only had one walk all game.”

“At the end we lost focus and a couple of girls made a couple of errors and we can’t do that.”
