Tippecanoe's Carly Clodfelter had a very impressive summer, in fact one that vaulted her to the top of the list of impressive sophomores throughout the Miami Valley.
Clodfelter didn't waste any time putting her improved skills on display Saturday as the Red Devils battled league-foe Stebbins, and looked to bounce back from a season-opening loss to Versailles.
Clodfelter scored 29 points, including 15 in the opening quarter, as the Red Devils had no trouble with the Indians 64-37, to even their record at 1-1 on the young season. Tipp vaulted out to an 18-1 lead after the opening quarter and didn't look back.
Junior Halee Printz, who has verballed to the University of Toledo, was also solid in all aspects of her game, adding 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
"We focused a lot on our defense at the beginning, and to hold them to one point was impressive," said Tipp coach Aaron Jackson. "They did a great job today and executed. The girls played with confidence against a Stebbins team who is much improved."
Jackson said they knew they had to contain the duo of Ashtin Brandon and Briana Williams, and they did that.
"We knew everything went through those two," Jackson said. "McKensie (Logan) did a great job on Briana."
Tipp scored early and often, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. After a Stebbins free throw, Clodfelter went to work. She scored 11 points over the next five minutes, and pushed the Red Devils lead out to 17 when the first quarter ended.
"Carly did a great job on defense and it led to some easy layups," Jackson said.
Stebbins didn't go away as they came out and scored eight points in the first two minutes of the second quarter, to close their deficit to 20-9, before Printz answered with an offensive putback. Aubrey Cox followed with a layup to take the Tipp lead back out to 24-9.
The Red Devils never saw their lead fall below 10 points again, as they took their halftime lead out to 31-18, then came out in the third quarter and put the game away.
Logan opened the second half with a quick layup, before the sophomore trio of Clodfelter, Cox and Cassidy Wasson scored the next nine points, and Tipp took a 45-18 lead with 4:21 left in the third period.
"It was a good first win," Jackson said, again praising the Indians for their improvement. "I can see Stebbins battling in the top tier of the division, they are athletic and experienced."
Versailles 59 Tippecanoe 52- in their season opener last week, the Red Devils battled one of Ohio's top Division Three teams down to the wire, before falling on the road by seven. Printz led the Red Devils with 19 points, while Clodfelter added 13 and Chelsea Clawson had 10.
"They have everything," Jackson said, referring to Versailles. "They have two great posts, then their guard hits five threes on us. They play hard and ran everything well."
Both teams battled throughout, with it never becoming more than a ten point game.
Tipp hosts Tecumseh on Saturday at 2:30.
