Tippecanoe Middle School students will have to wait until June 5 for their planned trip to Washington, D.C., thanks to the federal government shutdown.
The trip, though not an official school program, involves students and is organized in part by a couple of Middle School teachers.
It was planned for last weekend, a three-day weekend for the local schools because of Monday’s Columbus Day observance. Around 50 students were going on the trip.
Superintendent John Kronour said the trip was canceled last week because of fears the government shutdown would continue into the weekend and many stops included in the trip could not be open to visitors. Among planned stops were national monuments and the Smithsonian.
The rescheduled June trip will be the same itinerary and the same price. The trip usually is taken in June, but was moved to October to take advantage of better pricing, Kronour said.
“It is pretty tough to go to D.C. and visit the monuments and Smithsonian when they are closed. They all are part of making it a worthwhile trip, so the decision was made to move it to June,” he said.
