More Candidates File for November Election
As of Monday, four candidates had filed petitions to run for four seats up for election this year on Tipp City Council.
Filing petitions with the Miami County Board of Elections were Pat Hale, Joe Gibson, Katelyn Berbach and Matt Owen. Hale. Gibson and Berbach are incumbents. The fourth council member whose seat is up for election is Bryan Budding.
The filing deadline is Aug. 22 at the board of elections.
The board Aug. 15 certified candidates and issues for the November ballot, except those for Tipp City Council and West Milton Village Council. Those two government bodies have different filing deadlines outlined in their charters.
Two candidates were certified for two seats on the Tipp City Schools Board of Education. They are incumbents Carla Frame and Frank Maus.
Two candidates, both also incumbents, were certified for two seats on Monroe Township trustees. They are Phil Cox and Martin English.
Issues certified for the ballot include the 1 mill, three-year Monroe Township Fire levy renewal and the 3.8-mill, five-year renewal of the Bethel Township operating levy.
Elections Board Acknowledges End of Initiative Drive
The Miami County Board of Elections voted Aug. 16 to formally acknowledge a letter from Tipp City resident Steve Huffman withdrawing his request for an initiative petition regarding Tipp City council members’ pay.
Huffman had started the initiative petition process this summer before council voted to change its compensation to eliminate city subsidized health insurance beginning in 2016. The council also voted to raise council salaries, also effective in 2016, from $1,000 to $5,000 a year. Huffman notified Tipp City officials he would not pursue the initiative due to council’s vote to end the insurance, which he called unfair.
The board was asked by Tipp City Law Director David Caldwell to acknowledge a copy of Huffman’s letter, elections Director Drew Higgins told the board. The board voted 2-0 to make that acknowledgement with members Jose Lopez and Roger Luring voting.
Board members Robert Huffman Jr. and Kelly Gillis abstained from the vote. Huffman is Steve Huffman’s brother, while Gillis is married to Tipp City Mayor Dee Gillis.
Tipp City Man Pleads in Child Porn Case
A Tipp City man pleaded no contest Monday in a Miami County court to two felony charges of pandering obscenity involving a minor for alleged possession of child pornography on a computer.
James D. Holbrooks, 32, of Banyon Tree Way was charged May 20 after a search warrant was executed at this residence by police. Tipp City police were notified of a possible child pornography situation by a Troy police detective investigating Internet crime, according to a report filed with the charges.
Holbrooks pleaded no contest and was found guilty in Common Pleas Court. A presentence investigation was ordered and sentencing scheduled for Oct. 21.
