The life of a child wandering aimlessly can be set on the course towards success with the guiding hand of a mentor. The Big Brother Big Sisters organization hopes to embrace the children in Tipp City who need some positive direction.

A Tipp City resident, Kaicha Wilson is the Miami County Outreach Coordinator for Big Brother Big Sisters and is anxious to incorporate the program into her hometown. The mother of three, Wilson has seen a need to reach the neighboring children who are in one parent homes or are at risk, and could benefit from some guidance.

Wilson has witnessed tremendous turnarounds in those who had a Big Brother of Big Sister who spent quality time with them. “It helps children achieve their dreams just by having someone tell them that they can,” she said.

Anyone interested in being a Big Brother or Big Sister must go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. They are then paired with a Little who has similar interests. Once a month the Big and Little will have an activity together that they both enjoy; such as going to a park, shopping, or playing catch.

Having worked in Human Resources for several years, including with the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton, Lewis is experienced at screening applicants for child programs. She’s also dedicated to finding matches that will result in a long lasting friendship for both parties.

Wilson is also planning to have special classes that will be free for the community to participate in, including Mini Chef’s, to teach basic cooking skills. And Kid’s Zone, where building skills will be taught. “The classes will use math, reading, measuring and other skills that are used in our daily lives and will be in their future careers,” said Wilson.

Other classes may also include gymnastics, cheerleading, and flag football. All free and held at CrossRoads Christian Fellowship, 14 E. Broadway, where Wilson will have an office. Anyone interested in being a Big or knows of any Littles can contact Kaicha Wilson at (937) 329-9616 or at kwilson@bbbsgmv. They can also register or learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters by visiting www.bbbsgmv.org.

Beyond helping a young life, Wilson also views it as making a positive contribution to the community. “Tipp City is a place where people like to stay and raise their families. When you benefit a young person’s life you are providing for a better future,” she said.
