Sparked by smooth-swinging senior Lindsey Murray, the Tippecanoe golf team cruised to a 15-stroke win last week to capture the Central Buckeye Conference title.
Murray posted a 75, good for medalist honors, in the CBC event held at Reid Park in Springfield. She carded three birdies and an eagle in her round. She also had an uncharacteristic seven bogeys.
"It was an up and down round for me," Murray said. "But the team score of 345 was 15 strokes ahead of Indian Lake."
Red Devils Erika Brownlee shot 87, Ally Chitwood a 90 and Sammi Rowland a 93, good for Tipp's winning score of 345.
Moreover, sophomore Tori Merrick shot 101 and freshman Chloe Woodworth shot a 113 in the CBC event to gain valuable tournament experience.
Coach Scott Murray, who has coached the Red Devils since his daughter Lindsey was a freshman, characterized the golf team as "much improved" in 2013.
"The girls have gotten better mainly due to hard work and lots of practice," said Coach Murray. "We are in Division II this year after playing D-I for a few years, so we're looking down the road to make a good showing at the state."
Lindsey, who qualified for state as a freshman and carded a double eagle and hole-in-one in a 9-hole match at Reid Park, agrees.
She has been a golf competitor for 12 years, making her debut as a 6-year-old in the Pepsi Little People tournament played in Quincy, Illinois.
"I started learning about golf at about the age of 4," she said. "My (older) sister Laura had started playing golf and that got me started."
Now, with years of golfing experience behind her in her senior year at Tippecanoe, she wants to be the sparkplug to lead the girls to victory.
"We should do well this year," said Murray, who ahs averaged 35.5 strokes per nine holes this season.. "All the players are really keyed up and ready to go."
To reach state, the team has the challenge of the qualifying first at the D-II sectional slated Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Stillwater Valley in Versailles and also making a good showing at the district slated Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Pipestone in Miamisburg.
The Tippecanoe golf team, at press time, has a perfect 8-0 record in the 2013 campaign.
