This "overtime" thing is becoming a common thing lately for Tippecanoe.
Tied with visiting Urbana at 51-51 in regulation, and knotted at 55-55 after one overtime and 59-59 after the second OT, the Red Devils prevailed 66-60 in the third OT.
"We gritted this one out," said Coach Marcus Bixler, whose team improved to 15-4.
The CBC win assures a 3rd seed for the Red Devils in the upcoming Division II sectional at Springfield.
"This is what we were battling for -- the 3rd seed," Bixler said. "Urbana came into the game at 13-4, so our records were real close."
In the deciding 3rd OT, Junior Cameron Johnson scored a bucket off glass and senior Nick Fischer hit five free throws for the difference in the game. Meanwhile, Urbana hit one free throw and could not muster a basket from the field in the final OT.
"It was all a matter of stops and rebounds," Bixler said. "We told the kids to keep (Urbana) out of the paint."
In regulation, Urbana took a 51-49 lead before junior Ben Stucke scored the tying basket with 12 seconds left. Urbana misfired in an attempt to win the game, setting up OT.
"We had a chance to win in the second OT but things didn't work out," Bixler said.
Tippecanoe took matters in their own hands in the third OT, limiting Urbana to three attempts from the field without a score.
Urbana sharpshooter Triastan Singer tallied 16 points, but Bixler was happy with the defensive pressure supplied by Johnson, who scored 11 for the Red Devils.
"Johnson was outstanding defensively on Singer," Bixler said. "He pressured him for four quarters and three OTs, and held him to 16. That's huge for us."
Senior Nick Fischer and junior Ben Stucke each scored 11 points. Juniors Sean Ford had 9 points and Jared Ervin had 7.
Three days prior to the OT win over the Hillclimbers, host Tippecanoe needed overtime to defeat league foe Bellefontaine, 62-59 on Friday, Feb. 1.
Tippecanoe stands at 7-2 in the CBC Kenton Trail division and travels to league leading Shawnee (8-0) for a game this Friday. The Red Devils return home on Friday, Feb. 15, to host Kenton Ridge.
