For eight minutes, the Tippecanoe girls’ basketball team was like a race car, just tuning up their engine waiting for the race to begin. When the white flag dropped, they slammed the pedal to the floor and took off on an incredible run on their way to a non-league victory over Troy.
Leading 13-11 late in the first quarter, the Red Devils exploded on a 33-0 run over a span of 12 minutes, cruising to an easy 64-23 win over the Lady Trojans in a non-league contest last week at Tippecanoe.
“The game plan was defending (freshman Kennedi) Kyzer, she’s a good player and they run everything through her,” said Tippecanoe coach Aaron Jackson. “She had all 11 of their points (in the first quarter), and during a timeout, that was the one point I made. I told them they were giving me a lot of what they had, but not everything.”
“The girls notched it up that little bit extra after that.”
The Lady Trojans, who are very young this year starting three freshman and two sophomores, battled the Red Devils in the opening period. Halee Printz, who led Tipp with 16 points, put the Red Devils up early 7-2 and after layups from Aubrey Cox and Chelsea Clawson, they led 11-4.
Then… the white flag dropped.
Printz and Carly Clodfelter finished out the quarter with a 6-0 run, then in the second, Tipp took over.
Six different Red Devils scored as they pushed their lead out to 39-11 at the half. The onslaught continued in the third period, as they scored the first eight points of the period before Troy could finally answer on a putback. By then, the Red Devils led 46-13. Another 6-0 run made it 52-13.
“Troy had to change their gameplan once we got the lead,” Jackson said. “Obviously, Nathan (Kopp, Troy coach) would have loved to sit in that zone. We did an ‘ok’ job with it, but then our defense started picking up a little bit and started to get some steals and layups. When you make a team change their gameplan, that’s always a determining factor.”
Tipp had a balanced scoring attack in addition to the 16 from Printz. Clodfetler scored 13, Cox added 10 and the senior guards of Clawson (nine) and McKensie Logan (eight) also were key contributors. Kyzer scored 12 to lead Troy, but only one free throw after the first quarter.
* Kenton Ridge 54 Tippecanoe 52- For nearly three quarters, the Red Devils were in control of this huge CBC showdown. They led by 15 points at one point, and appeared to be on their way to taking over sole possession of first place in the conference.
Then came the fateful fourth quarter, where Kenton Ridge took over the game, and held the Red Devils offense in check, as they came storming back for a 54-52 win on Saturday night.
The game was tied in the closing seconds, when the Cougars scored with less than two seconds left. A desperation long inbound pass from Tipp failed, and the Cougars took home the win.
Clodfelter led the Red Devils with 20 points, while Printz added 13. For KR, Stefanie Davis scored 16 and Sydney Bates 13.
