Sickness has taken its toll on nearly every school the past several weeks, and Tippecanoe saw its girls basketball game affected last week against county rival and GWOC opponent Troy.
The Red Devils’ lone senior Taylor Prall was unable to play or attend the game, but the Red Devils pulled away in the second half for a 43-22 victory over the Trojans, as the regular season is complete and the post season begins Saturday for the Red Devils. Tipp’s defense held the Trojans to only four points in both the third and fourth quarters.
Allison Mader led the Red Devils with a game high 17 points, early outscoring the Trojans team. Brooke Aselage added 12 while Cali Stewart and Claire Hinkle each scored five.
What kind of a game was it for the Trojans? Their leading scorer in the game was Bailey Hess, as the senior scored seven points to lead Troy … without hitting a field goal. All seven points came from the free throw line.
Tipp came out and jumped on the Trojans early, leading 10-0 just three minutes into the game. Stewart and Mader opened the game with consecutive three’s, and when Mader and Aselage both scored, the Red Devils were in control early.
The Red Devils offense then went silent to allow the Trojans back in the game. Alaura Holycross ended the drought for the Trojans with their first points at the 3:00 mark of the quarter, and they closed the game to within 10-6. A three from Mader extended the Tipp lead, and they led 13-8 after the opening period.
It was an evenly played second period, as neither offense could produce anything for the first four minutes. Troy finally scored with 3:46 left in the half to close their deficit to three, but thanks to Aselage’s four points in the quarter, the Red Devils were in the lead 19-14 at the half.
It was all Tipp in the second half, as they stepped up their defense and held the Trojans to only four points in the third. Meanwhile the Red Devils started to extend their lead thanks to a three-point play from Hinkle, and Stewart added a score at the rim, making it a ten point game.
Mader closed out the third period by taking over. The Tipp junior scored three consecutive times over the final three minutes of the period, giving the Red Devils a 30-18 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Tipp’s defense continued to stifle the Trojans, holding them again to only four points as the Red Devils advanced to their 18th win of the season, including 14-0 in the GWOC.
*Tippecanoe honored Prall on Saturday night when the Red Devils battled Vandalia Butler in their season finale. Butler moved into second place last week with a win over a slumping Sidney team, who is 2-4 in their last six games.
The Red Devils now prepare for their sectional tournament, as they open the sectional tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m. against Graham, with their tournament games being held at Tecumseh High School. A win against the Falcons will put Tipp into the second round on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Urbana. The sectional championship game is set for Saturday, Feb. 25 at noon at Tecumseh.
