Three days after the Tippecanoe girls’ basketball team won a three overtime instant classic win against Sidney, the Red Devils boys’ wanted to join the party. Tipp played a solid complete game to stun the league-leading Yellow Jackets 55-44 to win their fifth game in the last six contests, and defeat the team previously unbeaten in league play.

Caiden Smith led the Red Devils with 22 points to give them the biggest win for the program in years.

Tipp jumped out on them early 6-1 before the Yellow Jackets tied the game at eight with 3:30 left in the opening period. Zach Bonifas hit a drive to the rim and a following three from Quenten Williams put the Red Devils up 15-11 in the last minute of the first period, before Sidney stormed back to tie the game after eight minutes.

Sidney opened the second period on a big 8-0 run and had scored the last 12 points to take a 23-15 lead before Tipp broke the streak at the six minute mark on a 15-footer from Adam Grieshop. Sidney led by five heading toward the half but Josh Wildermuth scored and when Williams hit a short shot on a rebound, the Red Devils trailed 27-24 at the half.

The second half completely belonged to the Red Devils, and they started fast. Grieshop and Bonifas each scored in the paint to give Tipp the lead with just under five minutes left in the third period. Smith then put the team on his back for the next two minutes.

After trading threes, Smith then hit two more from behind the arc and with 1:00 left in the third period, the Red Devils gained a 37-33 lead.

Early in the fourth was the difference for Tippecanoe. Smith hit a pair of free throws, part of a perfect night at the free throw line for the Red Devils, and just that quickly, Alex Gordon was whistled for consecutive technical fouls, ejecting him from the game and giving Smith four free throws for the Red Devils. He connected on all four of them and Grieshop added a layup, and Tipp saw their lead balloon to 12 points with 4:27 left in the game.

Sidney had one more run, cutting the lead to 47-41 with three minutes left, but Smith and Grieshop each scored and Tipp hit four more free throws in the final 1:17 to secure the win.

With the win, Tipp ran their record to 9-9 overall, while Sidney dropped to 13-4. The Jackets also dropped to 10-1 in conference play, while Tipp remains solidly in third place overall.

The Red Devils host Greenville on Friday in their final home game of the season.
