It didn’t take long for the Tippecanoe girls’ soccer team to set the tone for their CBC matchup last week against the Greenon Knights.
Two quick goals put the Red Devils in front early, and they maintained their solid defense they have played this season en route to a 7-0 win over the Knights at the Tipp Park last week.
“We are struggling a little bit to score lately, so it was nice to have a game like this,” said Tippecanoe coach Brandon Baker. “It gave us our confidence back, and we needed to work a little more with our possession, and we did that in the second half.”
For the Knights, their struggles continue, as they are fighting injuries and inexperience this season.
“Tipp is a very skilled team, and we are dealing with a lot of injuries,” Greenon coach Ray Raines said. “We only had one sub on varsity tonight. We deal with what we have. I think we have good talent, they just need to come together and learn to play together out there on the field.”
Hunter McKinney got the scoring underway just one minute into the game, when she took a pass at the 20 yard line from Holly Bernhold and scored to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, it was the same duo with the same results.
Lauren Lester made it 3-0 at the 20 minute mark, taking a pass from Lexi Polanski, and Lexi Blair wrapped up the scoring in the first half when she took a pass close to the net, and placed it past the keeper.
All of the second half scoring came in the first five minutes of the second half. McKinney scored her third goal of the game, followed by Lauren Weimer and Allie Wasson.
“We are getting back to the basics and our defense has only given up one goal all season,” Baker said.
*Also last week, the Tipp girls defeated Northwestern 4-1 to remain undefeated on the season. The Warriors remain in first place in the Mad River Division.
*Boys game- the Red Devils pulled away late for a 4-1 victory over the Greenon Knights to remain unbeaten on the season.
Peyton Smith scored unassisted ten minutes into the game to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead, then 15 minutes later, added his second goal with the assist from Wade Timmer for a 2-0 lead.
After Jordan Bardnell scored for the Knights to make it 2-1, Adam Greishop made it 3-1 scoring on a header from Timmer in the second half. Timmer capped the scoring as Tipp finished off the Knights.
“We had our chances in the first half, but couldn’t finish our opportunities,” Tippecanoe coach Scott Downing said. “Peyton had stepped up for us, and it playing with confidence and finishing his opportunities. Wade also is producing for us, and has been playing solid.”
*Also last week, Tipp defeated Northwestern 9-0. Mitch Colvin scored first, followed by Austin Haas (assist from Andrew DeBrosse), Colvin (assist Timmer), Jacob Niswonger (Greishop), own goal, Smith (assists from Zach Bonifas and Timmer), Colin Tateman (Kevin Bridget), Nathan Hamburg (Greishop) and Nisewonger (EJ Wasinsky).
