The four-person Miami County Board of Elections by spring will have three new members with the resignation of Democrat Kelly Gillis at year’s end and the upcoming departures of Republican Jose Lopez and Democrat Dean Tamplin at the end of their terms.

The departures will leave Ryan King, a Republican, as the only experienced board member on March 1. He joined the board a year ago with the departure of former board member Robert Huffman Jr.

The county Democratic Party has selected Dave Fisher of Bethel Township to take the board seat previously held by Gillis, a Tipp City resident. Fisher’s nomination has been sent to Secretary of State Jon Husted for approval.

Fisher attended the election board’s Jan. 19 meeting, talking briefly about his selection. He is the Democratic Party chair and has represented the party as a candidate. Fisher said he has served as a rover for the election office since the touch-screen voting machines first were introduced more than 10 years ago.

Tamplin, a Tipp City resident, said following the Jan. 19 meeting that he chose not to seek re-appointment after serving a three-year term. Tamplin said he “enjoyed serving on the bi-partisan board.”

Fisher said the Democrats chose party member Audrey Gillespie to also serve on the board. She is finalizing needed paperwork, he said.

Lopez, a Troy lawyer, has served two terms on the board.

The county Republicans will meet in February to select their new board member to recommend to Husted, said John “Bud” O’Brien, county Republican Party chairman.

As a board member, Fisher said he would want to see a new voting system purchased for the county as soon as possible.

During the Jan. 19 meeting, the board voted to increase the pay for elections office staff members, except the director and deputy director, by 2 percent. The staff includes two full-time and four seasonal workers.

Elections Director Bev Kendall and Deputy Director Eric Morgan were given pay increases by the board late last year when the positions were removed from overtime pay eligibility.
